Listening to: Allman Brothers - Shades of two worlds cd.
I say this because it's been several months since there were gigs on Friday and Saturday that interested me enough to go out both nights, but this time it's been so and I'm so glad.
I had not posted anything in two months mainly because there had been no gigs from people I already didn't have pics of but this changed Tuesday night. I had been looking forward to it.
While on holiday in Gran Canaria I got a Nikon Coolpix 4600 and, while a better camera than my good ol' Genius D211, there's also a downside to using it on venues like Honky Tonk. If you take photos without flash they're likely to turn out blurred, something that doesn't always occur with my humble Genius.
I frankly prefer to take photos with the light available, shunning flash and the like so I guess I'll carry on using the D211 in concerts. This week I took the Nikon though just to try. I'm not disappointed by the results but the continuous use of flash makes batteries drain real quick so....
I attended Viajazz in Villalba, a town near Madrid. Despite the title, it was not exactly a jazz showcase. I knew two of three acts playing - Roger Hodgson (former singer and member of Supertramp) and The Blues Brothers, and certainly none of them are jazz. Well, who on earth may not have heard of Blues Brothers yet?
The opening act was Candy Dulfer, a Dutch sax player who is normally on Prince's band. She and her band played mostly instrumentals, with a few song with vocals thrown in for good measure. That woman can play sax and her sidemen are not that at all. She is around 40 but perfectly looks 10 years younger, given how slim and fine she is!!!
After Candy, Roger came on stage. He wasn't lame but somehow restricted by the fact he was a one man show - just a keyboard, grand piano and an acoustic guitar. His was the performance I least liked of the three though I did anyway.
The headliners were The Blues Brothers Band, and they rightfully stole the show. Nearly two hours of fun and great performances. The lineup was faultless. From the original group we had Steve Cropper. Man, he is 64 and plays like if he was 20 years younger. There was also the great Eddie Floyd, another guy in his sixties who looks a lot younger. He is a real showman and his vocals are as strong as ever.
There was a great feeling of common fun both on stage and among the audience. My hands were certainly hurting by the end of the gig, at 2.20 in the morning.
I have pics of course though sadly they are not too close except but Candy's ones. As she is the least known act of the three, the surroundings of the stage were clearer than they got later. Whatever the case, I hope you enjoy the photos.
